The General and his Wife

Beijing Opera School

A common theme of Opera is the General, strong and good, but in a untenable position. Surrounded by enemies, he can still gain victory, but in doing so, risks certain death for his wife, whom he loves more than life itself. Unable to take that risk, he faces certain defeat. The wife, supremely loyal and loving, kills herself, freeing the General to win the battle. Thus she is a heroic, admirable character, while he is a tragic character, losing, even in victory, that which means most to him.
